In 2024 for National Album Day, Universal Music Recordings and Virgin Records are celebrating the 50th anniversary of 'Monty Python Live At Drury Lane'. The original artwork, inspired by Terry Gilliam’s unique animations and graphics, was created by Kate Hepburn, who later did visuals for Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones. Darren Evans and Holly Gilliam, responsible for the 2019 ‘Life Of Brian’ RSD release, have adapted it for the first picture disc release. After the success of four studio albums - 'Monty Python’s Flying Circus' (1970), 'Another Monty Python Record' (1971), 'Monty Python’s Previous Record' (1972), and 'The Monty Python Matching Tie and Handkerchief' (1973) - this album was recorded in March 1974 on the last night of a sold - out four - week run at the London theatre. It reached No. 19 on the UK album chart that July. The album features live sketches from the BBC TV programme Monty Python’s Flying Circus, written and performed by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin, with support from Lyn Ashley and Neil Innes. The message on the 1974 artwork about it being 'almost the last chance' seems a bit premature now with this anniversary celebration.
