The song was inspired by the closure of the Larcano dancehall in Coventry and reflected urban decay, unemployment, and racial tensions of the time - themes still relevant today. Voted the second - greatest UK single of all time by Alexis Petridis in The Guardian, it hit Number One in the UK charts and stayed there for 3 weeks, becoming a 1981 best - seller and a classic.
