Description
You can't grow if you're standing still. That's the thought of Nic Gohl from the Chicago quartet Deeper. As he and bandmates Shiraz Bhatti, Drew McBride, and Kevin Fairbairn wrote and recorded Careful!, their third record and Sub Pop debut, Gohl asked himself, 'Does it feel good when you're listening to this song? Does your body want to move with it?' He aimed for songs that even a two - year - old would enjoy, calling it 'basically pop music'. But this 'basically' has a lot of depth, as fans of 2020’s Auto - Pain can sense. On Careful!, they're testing the limits of their sound. In 'Tele', you can hear echoes of David Bowie’s Low in the rhythm and synths, and also traces of Auto - Pain in the drum and synth lines. 'Fame' is a wild ride, with a manic beat that almost falls apart, a trademark Deeper style. 'Build a Bridge' goes the other way, using a sharp guitar line to start big, emotional art - pop. On 'Sub', Gohl sings like Ian McCulloch, and the band rises to match his confidence. It's festival - worthy music that still has a garage - band feel. The mutual support in Deeper's music makes this diverse album a clear portrait of who they are. As McBride says, 'Careful! is about looking out for one another.' Track list: 1. Build a Bridge 2. Heat Lamp 3. Glare 4. Tele 5. Bite 6. Pilsen 4th 7. Sub 8. Fame 9. Everynight 10. Airplane Air 11. devil - loc 12. Dualbass 13. Pressure
