By 1959 when Jackie McLean started recording for Blue Note, this talented alto saxophonist had already been a key figure in the NYC jazz scene for nearly a decade. He spent the 1950s honing his skills alongside bebop legends like Miles Davis and Charles Mingus. As the 1960s dawned, McLean's hard bop sound became edgier and more adventurous. Inspired by Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane, he sought greater musical freedom, adding avant - garde elements while keeping his soulful swing and chordal base. On his 1963 album One Step Beyond, he joined forces with trombonist and composer Grachan Moncur III and brought in vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson instead of a pianist, giving the music a free and spacious feel. Later that year, inspired by this new direction, McLean brought Moncur, Hutcherson, Larry Ridley on bass, and Roy Haynes back to the studio to record his inside - out jazz masterpiece, Destination… Out! The quintet explores on four original pieces, creating fresh and exciting sounds that still resonate today.
