In August 1961, the John Coltrane Quintet performed at the iconic Village Gate in Greenwich Village, New York. At that time, Coltrane’s Classic Quartet was still taking shape, and a rising star, multi - instrumentalist Eric Dolphy, joined the group. Recently, 90 minutes of never - before - heard music from this performance were found at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. It offers a look at a short - lived yet powerful musical bond. The album features well - known Coltrane pieces like “My Favorite Things” and “Impressions”. There's also a stunning bass clarinet performance by Dolphy on “When Lights Are Low” and the only non - studio recording of Coltrane’s “Africa” from the Africa/Brass album. This recording is a special snapshot of Coltrane in the summer of 1961, when his signature live sound was starting to develop and he was exploring African influences.
