Description
On Garden Party, Rose City Band's country - psychedelic rock transports you to the vast open spaces of the American West and the free - spirited folks who live there. Led by the well - known guitarist and vocalist Ripley Johnson, Rose City Band boasts some of the top players in contemporary rock. These include pedal steel guitarist Barry Walker, keyboardist Paul Hasenberg, bassist Dewey Mahood (aka Plankton Wat), drummer Dustin Dybvig, and features Sanae Yamada of Moon Duo on Synthesizer. Initially, Rose City Band focused on what songwriter Johnson calls “porch music”. Recorded mostly at the Center for Sound, Light, and Color Therapy in Portland and mixed by John McEntire, Garden Party has guest appearances by Moon Duo's John Jeffrey on drums and Sanae Yamada on synths, along with Rose City Band live performers Hasenberg on keyboards and Walker on pedal steel. Ripley's porch has opened up for each musician in his life to shine. Even though it was mainly recorded as a solo project, the recordings capture the full - fledged sound of an ensemble. Taking a cue from bands like the Grateful Dead, Johnson says, “The songs won't really be finished until we play them on the road.” Like all great music, Garden Party touches your emotions and takes you to your happy place. It's an album that invites you to reset and offers a joyous musical ride where the band's sounds wrap around you. As Ripley puts it, “I always like when an album starts in one place and ends in another.” It's truly a beautiful musical journey.
