Description
In 2005, when Leon Michels and El Michels Affair released their debut record, Sounding Out The City, it was hard to predict where Michels' 'cinematic soul' sound would lead. After four EMA studio albums and numerous tribute and remix projects, while producing for industry giants, Michels has trademarked his unique sound, constantly taking audiences to new musical territories. This time, he ventures into hip - hop, creating a musical backdrop for one of the greatest rappers, Black Thought of The Roots crew. Released on Big Crown Records, Glorious Game is an outstanding debut collaboration. Michels offers his deep, soul - infused production, and Black Thought delivers some of his most personal and transparent verses. The two have known each other for a while. They first met in the 2000s when Black Thought was exploring the contemporary soul scene. Years later, musicians from Menahan Street Band, a group Michels co - founded in 2007, joined The Roots. This connection led to them doing fundraising events together. In 2020, during the COVID lockdowns, Black Thought reached out to Michels, and they decided to stay busy with this project. For Glorious Game, Michels composed and recorded soul songs in his studio, sampled himself, and created instrumentals for Black Thought. Sometimes, he used a traditional hip - hop approach, sampling others' music and adding live instrumentation. Mostly, he reinterpreted his own compositions. The result is a collection of loop - based tracks with an organic feel, giving Black Thought plenty of room to shine.
