Description
Five years after his groundbreaking debut won the Polaris Music Prize, Jeremy Dutcher is back with 'Motewolonuwok', a vibrant exploration of contemporary Indigeneity. The LP features songs in both his people's Wolasotqey language and, for the first time, in English. It goes beyond his previous works, including traditional songs, starlit ballads, and amazing orchestrations. Dutcher says he wanted to make an LP that wasn't always so certain of itself. His 2018 release, 'Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa', catapulted him to the top of Canadian performance. This follow - up is more personal, inspired by his understanding of being Two Spirit. In the Wolasotqey language, Two Spirit people are 'motewolonuwok' - 'the people of great spiritual power'. Dutcher came out as gay at 12, and 'Motewolonuwok' is him embracing his full identity. Tracks like '’tahcuwi Anelsultipon' show his devotion, while 'The Land That Held Them' has a powerful force. The LP also features a full orchestra arranged by Owen Pallett and a 12 - voice choir. It includes Wolastoqey traditionals, poetry by Qwo - li Driskill, and Dutcher's first English - written songs, allowing him to tell his community's stories of grief, resilience, and emergence. Tracks: 1. Skicinuwihkuk 2. Pomawsuwinuwok Wonakiyawolotuwok 3. Take My Hand 4. Wolasweltomultine 5. tahcuwi Anelsultipon 6. Sakom 7. Ancestors Too Young 8. The Land That Held Them 9. There I Wander 10. Together We Emerge 11. Rise in Beauty
