Description
Horsegirl, the New York - via - Chicago trio of best friends Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece, unveil their second album, Phonetics On and On, on February 14th. Produced by Cate Le Bon and recorded at The Loft in Chicago, their original sonic home, this album explores the boundaries between pop, minimalism, and playful experimentation.
Since the 2022 release of Versions of Modern Performance, hailed as "compelling from start to finish" by NME, Horsegirl has undergone significant changes. In the fall of 2022, they moved to New York City. This shift led to a new musical direction as they wrote outside Penelope's parents' basement for the first time.
In January 2024, Horsegirl returned to Chicago to record. The cold studio environment helped them find focus and intimacy. Cate Le Bon guided them into new, bright, and clear sonic landscapes, highlighting the songs' inventive nature. New elements like violins, synths, and gamelan tiles bring the album to life. The songs blend space and texture experimentation with a pop core, showcasing the band's confident song - writing.
The honesty in Horsegirl's writing takes us through girlhood and youth. You can feel the love among these best friends in every track, making Phonetics On and On a truly special album.
