Horsegirl, the New York - based trio from Chicago featuring best friends Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece, are excited to unveil their second album, Phonetics On and On, on February 14th. Produced by Cate Le Bon and recorded at The Loft in Chicago, their original sonic haven, this album delves into the blurred lines between pop, minimalism, and fun experimentation. Since the 2022 release of Versions of Modern Performance, which NME called 'compelling from start to finish', Horsegirl has undergone many changes. In late 2022, they moved to New York City. Penelope and Nora attended NYU, and for the first time, the trio wrote music outside of Penelope's parents' basement. You can hear the influence of their new environment in their music, yet during this period of great change, the band turned introspective. In January 2024, Horsegirl returned to Chicago to record. The cold made them focus in the studio, and Cate Le Bon guided them to explore new, bright, and clear sonic areas, highlighting the creativity of the songs. New elements like violins, synths, and gamelan tiles are woven into the record. The songs balance experimentation with space and texture while keeping a catchy pop core. A simple yet confident style showcases the band's songwriting skills. Only Nora, Penelope, and Gigi could have written these songs. Horsegirl writes with unexpected honesty, taking us through scenes of girlhood and youth. Their friendship shines through in the album, and the love they share is felt throughout Phonetics On and On.
