Description
Plastic Death, the second album by Glass Beach, arrives nearly five years after their debut. Their 2019 first album built a cult following for its bold portrayal of queer life via social media, grand ambition, and scrappy yet adventurous production. Plastic Death is a natural evolution of what made their debut special.
Years of writing, demo - tinkering, cancelled tours, and lockdowns have strengthened the chaotic core of Glass Beach's maximalist style. Frontperson J McClendon teams up with lead guitarist Layne Smith, bassist Jonas Newhouse, and drummer William White to create something adventurous on every song. Instruments like trumpet, trombone, violin, and marimba add to the band's creative and dexterous sound, pulling from indie rock, jazz, prog, hardcore, metal, and experimental music.
The lead single, “the CIA,” showcases the band's ambitious writing. It's a dark, dance - ready post - punk/jazz hybrid, with a mix of synth and saturated guitar. The track ends with a brutal modern metal climax full of glitchy production and sharp stops. The album's artwork is detailed, depicting a bioluminescent double album set in a dark undersea with neon moments, a metaphor for the optimism and catharsis in the songs.
McClendon says, “This album is the Pacific garbage patch: cultural trash seemingly thrown together by accident, in contrast to each other.” Plastic Death is a complete, uncompromising, and playful work of art. Every detail in its 13 tracks is full of intention and possibility.
