In 1982, Echo & The Bunnymen dropped the single The Back Of Love, about nine months before the 1983 album release. This single rocketed into the UK top 20 and charted in Ireland too. It set the stage for the 1983 release of Porcupine. Ian Broudie, who'd later form The Lightning Seeds, returned to produce, just like he did for their debut Crocodiles. At first, the band's label rejected the album. But they re - recorded it with the amazing Lakshminarayana Shankar, an Indian violinist, singer, and composer, who added beautiful strings to the tracks. The result was a chart - topping success! The Cutter hit #8 on the singles charts, and Porcupine landed at #2 on the album charts, even getting certified Gold. Porcupine made it onto many end - of - year critics' lists, and The Cutter remains a fan - favorite to this day.
