Description
Don't try to get Rozi Plain to explain her captivating fifth album, Prize. Its ten magical tracks seem to exist in a different world, where feelings are more important than meanings, thoughts can freely wander, and you can fully enjoy the moment. Rozi's signature free - floating sound started with her 2015 hit Friend and was solidified by 2019's globally loved What A Boost (Pitchfork described it as 'Like slipping between cotton sheets'). Prize builds on these but draws inspiration from other sources. It's Rozi's most upbeat and daring album so far. Disco and rave elements, saxophones that sound like strings, fun synths, and harps all contribute to the album. Every sound has a big impact, and every texture is rewarding. Rozi's vocals are more charming, bold, and bright than ever. The male and female backing vocals feel like friendly drop - ins. Started before the pandemic, composed and recorded in various places like Glasgow, the Isle of Eigg, a French Basque seaside village, Margate, and London's Total Refreshment Centre, Prize may seem easy - going, but creating each song was as labor - intensive as spinning a spider's web. A group of 15 musicians are featured, including Kate Stables, with whom Rozi has toured in This Is The Kit for the past decade, contemporary jazz star Alabaster De Plume, and Minneapolis - based saxophonist Cole Pulice.
