Instead, they crafted an eccentric home - studio sound. Using a few cheap mics like a Radio Shack PZM and a Tascam cassette 4 - track recorder in a 3rd - floor Cambridge apartment, with wood floors and Christmas lights setting the mood along with an Ampeg VT 40 amp and a small chord organ. The duo waited for the neighbor to leave for work to play until the tunes popped. They stopped before the neighbor returned to finish the project. Then, they sneaked into Fort Apache studios with Tim O'Heir, producer of Sebadoh's 'Bakesale' LP. Tim mixed the songs in hours using a high - end Neve board with the Tascam on it.
