He says, 'Writing this album, I opened up my closet, and a skeleton came out.' The common thread in all the songs is the unsaid, whether due to guilt, shame, or other reasons. Hawk admits that this album makes many demands, and he fully dedicated himself to it. At this point, with only a few close associates having heard the finished album, he's still unsure of the reaction from fans, critics, and even family. He jokes that this might be the first of his records his parents won't like, but the nervousness tells him it's the right thing to do. After just a couple of listens, it's clear this was a risk worth taking. A Firmer Hand is Hamish Hawk's best and boldest record to date.
