Description

Alagbon Close is a groundbreaking album by Fela. It's the first in his collection to feature sleeve art designed by Ghariokwu Lemi, whose work quickly became a key part of Fela's album series and Afrobeat's powerful message. The album takes its name from the headquarters of the Nigerian Criminal Investigation Department in Lagos. The title track tells the story of two police raids on Fela’s house in April and May 1974. During the first raid, the police searched for weed but found none. In the second, they tried to plant a joint on Fela, who promptly grabbed and swallowed it. He was detained at Alagbon Close for three days as the police waited for the 'evidence' to pass. Fela was held in a communal cell called Kalakuta Republic by the prisoners. His cellmates managed a 'feces switch', and Fela was declared innocent. After his release, he renamed his house Kalakuta Republic. 'Alagbon Close' strongly criticizes the Nigerian police's violence, arrogance, and immunity from prosecution. Fela sings, 'Nothing special about uniform,' and the chorus replies, 'Uniform na cloth na tailor dey sew am like my dress,' highlighting that a uniform doesn't make one above the law. Tracklisting: 1. Alagbon Close 2. I No Get Eye For Back

This vinyl LP is a collector's item. To play it, first make sure your turntable is clean and in good working condition. Gently place the record on the turntable and use the tonearm to lower the needle onto the groove at the start of the track you want to listen to. When not in use, store the vinyl in its sleeve and keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent warping. Avoid touching the grooves with your fingers to keep the sound quality high. If the record gets dirty, use a vinyl record cleaning brush to gently remove dust and debris.
