Description
Aviary is an epic musical journey described by Julia Holter as 'the cacophony of the mind in a melting world.' Released on October 26th via Domino, this Los Angeles composer's album is her most impressively expansive work yet. It's full of surprising twists and dazzling instrument arrangements. Following her critically - acclaimed 2015 record, Have You in My Wilderness, it starts with a line from a 2009 short story by Etel Adnan: 'I found myself in an aviary full of shrieking birds.' This scenario, similar to a horror movie, also mirrors 2018 life with political scandals, natural disasters, and voices shouting into the void. Holter says, 'Amid daily internal and external babble, it's hard to find one's foundation. This album reflects the feeling of cacophony and how one responds as a person - in behavior, in seeking love and solace.' The first - shared song, 'I Shall Love 2', echoes hope: 'I am in love... There is nothing else.' When Holter mentions love in many songs, it's about seeking compassion and humility in a world testing empathy. In Aviary, this search for sweetness becomes a metaphor for the creative process, breaking through historical, linguistic, and musical hierarchies for something more fluid, inclusive, and unique. Aviary combines Holter's subtly theatrical vocals, Blade Runner - inspired synth work, and an immersive mix of strings and percussion across fifteen songs to show the boundless scope of her vision.
