Despite presenting some of Marc Almond's most beloved songs of that era, like 'Adored & Explored', 'The Idol', 'Come In Sweet Assassin', and 'We Need Jealousy', 'Fantastic Star' had a long and at - times troublesome creation process. Recording sessions spanned two record companies and involved four big - name producers: original Soft Cell / Bronski Beat producer Mike Thorne, the legendary Mike Hedges who collaborated with The Cure, Banshees, and Beautiful South, house pioneers The Beatmasters, and Martyn Ware of The Human League / Heaven 17. The album offers a thrilling, sonically diverse journey through all the genres Marc had mastered, from gritty guitar - based rock 'n roll to beautifully orchestrated ballads, and from cutting - edge electronica to pure pop. For this long - awaited vinyl release, Marc revisited the original track order. He removed two songs from the CD version: the long 'The Idol' in favor of the punchier single version and 'Shining Brightly' which he felt didn't fit. Instead, the Neal - X co - written and still - popular live track 'The User' is on LP2, along with two lovely 'Child Star' B - sides, 'Christmas In Vegas' and 'My Guardian Angel', which end the album more satisfyingly. Marc also chose his original pick for the album cover, his favorite shot from 1995 by legendary fashion photographer Zanna. 'Fantastic Star – The Artist’s Cut' comes with two fully annotated printed inner bags with lyrics and a new design by Philip Marshall.
