Charlie Hilton, recognized for her work in the band Blouse, has launched a new musical journey with her first solo album, 'Palana'.
It's no wonder that many songs on 'Palana' explore changing identities, forms, and ideas. The album's title refers to Hilton's Sanskrit name, which she left behind after high - school for the androgynous 'Charlie'. The theme of the album is well - captured by a Hermen Hesse quote Hilton uses as a personal motto: “Man is not a fixed and enduring form… he is an experiment and a transition.”
With Jacob Portrait of Unknown Mortal Orchestra as the producer, Hilton experimented freely with diverse sounds and moods outside the band framework. 'Funny Anyway' is a stark track with only string accompaniments, where Hilton sounds like a confessional French chanteuse. 'Let’s Go To A Party' is a cheeky icy dance track with thick, bouncing synths and a catchy chorus. Tracks like 'Pony' recall Blouse's psychedelic style, paying homage to bands like Broadcast and United States Of America. '100 Million', produced by Woods’ Jarvis Taveniere, ends the album in a soft, acoustic, and light - hearted way, with Mac DeMarco contributing percussion and backup vocals.
The various moods on 'Palana' reflect Hilton's influences like Nico, Marc Bolan, and Jonathan Richman. As Hilton says, “The music on this record is naive, just like a person's inner self. I feel like I'm many people.”
