Don't try to get Rozi Plain to explain her enchanting fifth album, Prize. Its ten magical tracks seem to exist in a different world, where feelings outweigh meanings, thoughts can wander freely, and you can soak in the moment as long as you wish. Rozi's unique, free - floating sound was first introduced in her 2015 breakthrough album Friend and solidified in 2019's globally loved What A Boost (Pitchfork described it as 'Like slipping between cotton sheets'). Prize builds on these but takes inspiration from other sources. It's Rozi's most upbeat and daring album so far. Disco and rave elements, saxophone made to sound like strings, fun synths, and harp all contribute to the album's charm. Every sound has a big impact despite its size, and every texture is rewarding. Rozi's mesmerizing vocals are more vibrant than ever, and the male and female backing vocals feel like friendly drop - ins. Started before the pandemic, the album was composed and recorded in various places, from Glasgow and the Isle of Eigg to a seaside village in French Basque Country, Margate, and London's famous Total Refreshment Centre. Although Prize sounds effortless, creating each song was as labor - intensive as spinning a spider's web. It features 15 artists, including Kate Stables, with whom Rozi has toured for the past decade in This Is The Kit, contemporary jazz star Alabaster De Plume, and Minneapolis - based saxophonist Cole Pulice.
