Description
The debut collaboration between American minimal techno pioneer Troy Pierce and Colombian audiovisual artist Natalia Escobar, known as Pierce With Arrow, took an unconventional approach. First, they crafted a series of shadowy surrealist videos and then composed music inspired by them. This reverse process was highly productive. Shatter is a captivating, slow - burning noir journey inspired by the Greek myth of Echo and Narcissus. It combines elements of sleepwalker dub, metallic lament, broken beats, and erotic negative space. The album powerfully conveys the legend's core idea: 'There is nothing more complex than a shattered heart, or a heart that can't love.' Despite their background in dark dance - floor music, the partnership shows remarkable rhythmic restraint. The 10 tracks on the album shift between glamour and gloom, with only occasional ominous metronomes setting the mood. They adopted a'spatial approach' for this project, evident in the music's immersive design and patient execution, allowing every clang and bass ripple to fully resonate. Guest appearances by austere techno producer Konrad Black on 'Obsidian Glass' and drum n bass expert dBridge on 'It's A Love Story, After All' blend seamlessly, adding subtle accents to the exploration of longing and lust. However, the closing track, 'Narcissus', brings a change as it swells elegiacally over a muted heartbeat, like Narcissus in awe of his own reflection, revealing true beauty at last.
