Originally released on Science/Virgin in September 2000, Solaris solidified Rupert Parkes' status as a major force in underground dance. It moved on from the mathematical drum and bass of his debut, Modus Operandi, surprising some fans. Modus Operandi, released in 1997, was a critical and commercial hit, establishing Photek as a key figure in drum and bass. Solaris, released three years later, was highly anticipated.
