When it hit the screens in September 1984, Stop Making Sense was a huge artistic and commercial success. The film got people dancing in theatre aisles, and the soundtrack sold over two million copies. Just last year, it was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress due to its cultural, historical, and aesthetic importance. The idea for Stop Making Sense came when director Jonathan Demme watched Talking Heads perform during their 1983 Speaking in Tongues tour. He then proposed making the show into a concert film, and they collaborated for a few months to finalize details.
