Oakland artist Madeline Kenney explores the unknown on her third album, Sucker’s Lunch. She redefines love songs, making them more cautious than exuberant and more nuanced than passionate devotion. Sonically, it builds on Kenney’s earlier guitar - driven sound, a clear step forward for an artist with a unique voice for universal feelings. Kenney enlisted Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack again. They crafted the songs in sessions across Oakland, San Francisco, and Durham. Stack and Wasner’s rhythm section complements Kenney’s off - kilter guitar, with synths, saxophone, and complex harmonies. Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner adds his special tenor to the lead single “Sucker.” The songs are both immediate and deeply moving, familiar yet full of surprises.
