Description
Lou Donaldson, an alto saxophonist, had already led seven Blue Note sessions before creating his undisputed masterpiece, Blues Walk, in 1958. After his first appearance on a Milt Jackson date in 1952, he quickly became a regular on the Blue Note scene, featuring in sessions led by Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Jimmy Smith, and co - leading with Clifford Brown. On Blues Walk, Donaldson brought back the lineup from his 1957 album Swing and Soul. With Herman Foster on piano, Peck Morrison on bass, Dave Bailey on drums, and Ray Barretto on congas, they created an excellent six - song set. The title track, Cool Struttin’, a laid - back minor blues, is one of his most memorable themes, opening the album with a standout performance. Donaldson shows his bluesy side on “Play Ray,” his bop skills on uptempo numbers like “Move” and “Callin’ All Cats,” and gives stunning renditions of the standards “Autumn Nocturne” and “The Masquerade Is Over.” This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is in stereo, all - analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. Tracklist: Side A: 1. Blue Walk, 2. Move, 3. The Masquerade Is Over; Side B: 1. Play Ray, 2. Autumn Nocturne, 3. Callin' All Cats.
