Other Doors is Soft Machine's first studio album since 2018's Hidden Details, marking a new milestone in the 55 - year history of this legendary prog/jazz/fusion band. It's both an end and a start. Drum legend John Marshall makes his final studio appearance on this album. At 81, after recording, he retired due to health issues. Bass player Fred Baker joins the band following Roy Babbington's retirement. Roy had played with the group since 1970. The album offers amazing new music and inspired performances. It also re - imagines two Soft Machine classics: 'Penny Hitch' and 'Joy of a Toy'. With atmospheric improvisations, psychedelic free jazz, and more, Soft Machine continues to create boundary - less, jazz - based music full of ambition. John Etheridge from the '70s version of the band and sax/flute star Theo Travis lead the group. Since 2021, Fred Thelonious Baker, a 30 - year - long Canterbury scene musician, replaced Roy on bass.
