Remain In Light: Vinyl LP

The musical shift that started with Fear Of Music reached its peak on Talking Heads' fourth album, Remain In Light. Tracks like 'I Zimbra' and 'Life During Wartime' from the earlier album set the stage for this disc. The band explored African polyrhythms in driving groove tracks, with David Byrne chanting and singing his distinct, disconnected lyrics. Remain In Light had more words than previous Talking Heads records, yet in the music's flow, their significance was lessened. The album's single, 'Once In A Lifetime,' didn't do well at first. But over time, it became a fan - favorite. A striking video, its appearance in the 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense, and a second single release (the live version) due to its use in the 1986 movie Down And Out In Beverly Hills made it a minor chart hit. Byrne's verses in 'Once In A Lifetime' sound uneasy ('And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife/And you may ask yourself, well, how did I get here '), while the reassuring chorus ('Letting the days go by') balances them. Even without a successful single, Remain In Light was a hit. It showed that Talking Heads connected with an audience eager to follow their musical evolution. This inventive and influential album marked the end of one phase of the group's development and was their last new music for three years.
