Description
In the 90s alternative rock scene, Morphine stood out as a truly unique band. Formed in 1989 in Cambridge, Mass, by vocalist/bassist Mark Sandman, saxophonist Dana Colley, and drummer Jerome Deupree (later replaced by Billy Conway), they blended blues, jazz, and rock into a distinct 'low - rock' style. Sandman's deep, crooning vocals and his two - string electric bass, often used with a slide, along with Colley's growling baritone sax, created a sound like no other. 'Cure For Pain' is their second album on Rykodisc, released on September 14, 1993. Jerome Deupree left during recording due to health issues. Tracks like 'Sheila' and 'In Spite of Me' were featured in the 1994 indie film 'Spanking the Monkey', 'Thursday' appeared on 'Beavis and Butt - head', and 'Buena' was in 'The Sopranos' and 'Daria'. In 2014, it ranked eighth on Alternative Nation's 'Top 10 Underrated ‘90s Alternative Rock Albums' list. As of 1995, it sold 107,000 copies in the US and over 300,000 worldwide.
