Description
Musician, writer, and Renaissance man Baxter Dury is back with his seventh studio album, 'I Thought I Was Better Than You.' Set for release on June 2nd, 2023, via Heavenly Recordings, this album is produced by Paul White, well - known for his work with Golden Rules, Charlie XCX, and Danny Brown. Alongside Baxter's regular vocalist Madeline Hart, rising singer - songwriters Eska and JGrrey also feature on the album. 'I Thought I Was Better Than You' ushers in a new era for Baxter, introducing a 'faux - confrontational' character. The album delves into Baxter's childhood, openly discussing the complex situation of being born into fortunate yet toxic circumstances due to his surname, without the proper structure or sense of responsibility. It's about being caught between one's own talent and someone else's success, with 'someone else' being his dad, Ian Dury. As the song 'Shadow' poignantly states, 'But no one will get over that you're someone's son/Even though you want to be like Frank Ocean/But you don’t sound like him, you sound just like Ian.' This record is also an extension of Baxter's 2021 book, 'Chaise Lounge.' He expands on the book's language, using words to create abstract images. Many moments from the book are revisited, with characters like 'Tricksy' reappearing in 'Aylesbury Boy' and 'Pale White Nissan.' It tells the story of a young, troubled Baxter, caught between a rebellious world and a desire for normalcy. Tracks include 'So Much Money,' 'Aylesbury Boy,' 'Celebrate Me,' 'Leon,' 'Crashes,' 'Sincere,' 'Pale White Nissan,' 'Shadow,' 'Crowded Rooms,' and 'Glows.'
