Spirit of the New Land (Black Jazz Series): Vinyl LP

Among artists on the Black Jazz label, keyboardist and composer Doug Carn was super productive, releasing four albums. In 1972, 'Spirit of the New Land' came out as his second Black Jazz record and the first to feature his wife, vocalist Jean Carn, in the title. We picked this album because it's highly collectible and shows Doug's creative idea of adding lyrics to jazz standards. Jean Carn's amazing vocals bring 'Blue in Green' by Miles Davis and 'Search for the New Land' by Lee Morgan to life. Doug's original pieces like 'Arise and Shine' and 'My Spirit' are full of spiritual energy thanks to Jean's wide vocal range. The album also features great musicians, such as trumpeter Charles Tolliver, saxophonist George Harper, trombonist Garnett Brown, tuba player Earl McIntyre, and drummer Alphonse Mouzon. And there's a nice bonus - liner notes by Pat Thomas with excerpts from an interview with Doug Carn himself!
