Description
FLOAT is thrilled to introduce their second artist. UK electronic artist and Szun Waves member Luke Abbott presents a special 10 - track album for Piano Day 2019, an international event by Nils Frahm for piano - related projects. As Luke Abbott says, 'It's a very self - contained body of work, I haven't ever made music with this kind of sound palette before.' 'Music from the Edge of an Island' shows Abbott shifting from his experimental electronic style to a compositional approach with VST instruments. Instead of synthesis and improvisation, piano motifs lead the album, with emotive melodies and sparkling arrangements. This record started as a soundtrack commission for Jessica Hynes' film 'The Fight' and became a full - fledged album. The coastal setting of the film inspired the album's theme: 'I had this idea about being on the edge of England, almost ready to fall off a cliff into the sea but keeping your balance on the edge.' Abbott had been thinking about writing for the piano for months. Without his own piano, he used a piano VST on the computer and enjoyed the creative process. The writing was quick, resulting in pieces that blend MIDI computer music and live performance. 'Music from the Edge of an Island' is a collection of gentle reveries, with soft ballads and active motions. The opening track 'Sea' starts with a mysterious piano waltz and then synth drones take over. 'Island' has piano triplets, cello strokes, and glass pads before moving to the melancholic 'Tree'. Quieter parts contrast with tracks like 'Moments' and 'On Rope', and lyrical moments can be found in 'Adjustment' and 'A Different Tree'. The album will be released on Piano Day, March 29th, in LP, Limited Edition LP, and Digital formats via FLOAT. Each record comes with a 'How To Take Care of Your Piano Guide', following the 'How To Take Care of Your Vinyl Guide' from FLOAT's first release. Luke Abbott will perform with Jack Wyllie at FLOAT's Piano Day event at the Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green, along with Reeps One and Andrea Belfi.
